The original Find-A-Part was formed in 1978. It was born from the realisation of how frustrating it was for parts buyers to keep phoning dismantler after dismantler and being told "sorry those parts are not in stock". A link with dismantlers was clearly needed because although the required parts were sitting in a dismantlers premises somewhere many buyers would give up the search for cheaper recycled parts and either purchase new or reconditioned parts instead.

From both the individual dismantlers and a dismantling industry point of view the potential sale and therefore profit was lost, as there was nothing but chance to bring buyer and supplier together.
